Tools of the Trade: Making the Most of My iPad

I don’t usually gush about a tech gadget. That is, until I found one iPad  accessory that has transformed my iPad from a cool toy to an absolute workhorse for my business.

Don’t get me wrong … I already enjoyed my iPad. I could review email, read books on my Kindle app, check up on my friends’ Facebook statuses, and get trounced by my husband on Words with Friends.

In other words, I used my iPad as a toy. It was fun, no doubt, but surely it could do more for me and my business.

When I work, I need to write, and writing anything of length is difficult on the iPad’s screen-based keyboard. So whenever I needed to work outside of my home, I would drag along my laptop.

My Favorite iPad AccessoryThat is, until I found the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for my Ipad.  This keyboard is the one iPad accessory that pushes the boundaries of what I can do with it. It’s a keyboard that functions as a magnetic, protective cover that automatically wakes my iPad when I open it.  Pop it off, lay it flat and I can place my iPad in a groove just above the keys. (See the photo.)

Why This Device is Great for Association Executives, Board Members and Writers:

Glad you asked.  It’s a great addition to my iPad for one reason: I have no more issues with typing anything of length. I can tuck it into my purse and pull it out whenever I need it. I can take serious notes, reply at length to my email messages, and write whenever I find my a spare few minutes: in the car line, at the dentist’s waiting room, well, you get the picture. And the best reason I love it? Taking meeting notes no longer requires my laptop. After I get home, I sync with Dropbox to keep important notes and document updates accessible to both devices.

Yes, there are other keyboards, but I love the Logitech Ultrathin’s design. There are a few cons, though. For now, it only works on the iPad 2 and the third generation iPad.  It doubles the weight of my iPad, but it is much lighter than carrying around my laptop.  Finally, there isn’t a touchpad, but I find I don’t need one.

I’ve had people stop and ask me about it when I am working at Starbuck’s. Honestly, I can’t say enough about how much I like it. The charge lasts around 6 months… no kidding. I have yet to recharge mine.

Here’s a quick video to give you a better ideas the design, which is what makes it different than your typical iPad keyboard/cover:

If you choose to use this keyboard cover, I’d love to know what you think of  it.

5 Ways to Generate Income for Your Association Website

Sure, your association’s website could be stronger, but redesigns and updates take a considerable chunk out of your association budget, right?

Not necessarily.

If your website is more of a financial drain than an essential component of your organization, then it’s time to utilize your association’s online presence…to help pay for your online presence.

5 Ways to Generate Income for Your Association Website

Association executives and managers need to know that yes, there are ways that your website can generate income to help it be the central hub of your organization…which is exactly what it needs to be in today’s internet-saturated world.

Here are 5 income-generating ideas for your association website:

  1. Select Vendor Sponsorships: Your association and its sponsors have a mutually-beneficial relationship: You have a community of members sharing a common interest, and vendors have important updates of products and services that your members need to know. Generate income by providing several featured ad spaces for your vendors’ latest products … for a reasonable fee. Ad sales can also be incorporated into multi-leveled sponsorships, such as gold-level sponsorships. Your association can retain its professional reputation by regulating the number of ads shown and insuring that the product or service is relevant to your industry.
  2. Paid Opportunity (i.e., Job) Listings: Charge a small fee for listing relevant opportunities to your membership.  These could be job listings from industry businesses, or public relation announcements such as new start-ups, completed projects and new hires. Just make sure the fee is reasonable.
  3. Featured Webinars by Industry Experts: Your association or organization needs to stay relevant to your membership . The best way to do this is to provide frequent, relevant information to your members. You can do that—and generate income in the process—by offering informative webinars to your membership.  Online meeting and webinar services such as Click Meeting, the one I use, can help your association provide these webinars. Charge a similar fee to a typical networking event or sponsored lunch session.
  4. Paid Informative Articles: You can also allow an industry expert related to your profession place an educational article on your site for a limited time.  These could be an instructional article about a new product or service, or perhaps a promotion of a new industry book. Be aware that you must disclose somewhere online whenever your association receives payment for product recommendations. This can be a tactful statement following the article, stating that this is a paid article and that the ideas within are not necessarily supported by your association.
  5. Affiliate advertising: Lastly, if your members regularly use certain types of products, you could review industry-related products that offer affiliate links. Keep in mind that disclosure is required by law. Provide an honest reviews by select members of your organization. You don’t have to provide a glowing review to receive affiliate monies.

Why not make your website work for you, rather than drain your budget?

Try some of these ideas and let me know what you think.
